This month we are spotlighting an employee, Ron Witt, who is not really sure how long he has worked for SRDA – he thinks it is 11 years. The amount of time is not as important as his record of service is lengthy.
Ron works as a driver for the SRDA Transportation office, providing rides to those in the community who need to get to their doctor’s office or grocery store. With a quick smile and helpful attitude, Ron whisks the client off to their desired location and back home again, safe and sound. He takes great care to ensure the rider’s comfort and provides great onboard conversation. In fact, Ron says his interactions with the clients is one of his favorite parts of his job. He likes to lend an ear (let them “vent” as he says) and allow the client time to discuss things that may be troubling them or help overcome the loneliness they may be feeling.
Admittedly, he was a bit of a rowdy character in his younger days hanging out with friends, getting into trouble, but he left those days in the past and has sought spiritual counsel and now speaks of his deep faith in a higher power. Over the past 50 years, Ron has been on 8 mission trips to Mexico and 3 to a reservation in Arizona. He travelled to the Holy Land in the 1970’s and was fortunate enough to see the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea Scrolls at Golan Heights, the Coliseum, and catacombs in Rome and was re- baptized in the Jordan River. He wishes more people could have similar experiences.
Ron was employed for 15 years by the City of Pueblo as a street sweeper operator and said he found all sorts of lost objects in the gutters – purses, knives, guns. He had a cool job keeping the streets safe and clean! Now when he has time, he likes to tool around on his Can-Am 3-wheeler which he readily admits is his “therapy” as it takes concentration and focus but allows his mind to take a much-needed break. He has 2 sons; one lives in Florida with grandkids & great grandkids. No where in the Bible does it mention retiring, so, as a Servant, he will continue to serve. Thank you, Ron, for your dedication and service.
By the way, Ron has worked here just a month shy of 11 years
SRDA Transportation can provide rides to and from medical appointments, prescription pickup and grocery shopping Monday through Friday 8am-5pm with ADA-compliant wheelchair accessible vehicles. To reserve a ride, clients must call 3 business days ahead. Serving all of Pueblo County, this grant-funded program accepts voluntary contributions, but a rider is never denied service due to inability to donate.
